Some thoughts on Wikipedia

Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, has made finding background information incredibly easy. But if you are planning to use it as a key resource for your research beware:

Wikipedia and other encyclopedias (whether in print or online) do not qualify as scholarly resources.

Encyclopedias are a good place to start your research, but not are generally not considered acceptable sources to cite.

The collaborative and dynamic nature of Wikipedia presents a number of additional concerns regarding the quality and authority of the entries.

Search for Safety Data Sheets and labels by substance, manufacturer, and/or CAS number. Most are in PDF file format. Free without registration.
NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards
The NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards (NPG) informs workers, employers, and occupational health professionals about workplace chemicals and their hazards. The NPG gives general industrial hygiene information for hundreds of chemicals/classes. The NPG clearly presents key data for chemicals or substance groupings (such as cyanides, fluorides, manganese compounds) that are found in workplaces.

PubChem
PubChem is an open chemistry database at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This database mostly contains small molecules, but also larger molecules such as nucleotides, carbohydrates, lipids, peptides, and chemically-modified macromolecules. They collect information on chemical structures, identifiers, chemical and physical properties, biological activities, patents, health, safety, toxicity data, and many others.
