Resources Outside of Library Databases

While database content is generally deemed more reliable than open web content, there are some websites that provide primary and secondary sources that are unavailable elsewhere. Like any source please evaluate this content carefully before using it!

Government Websites

The United States Government hosts numerous websites that provide direct access to government data, statistics, publications, and primary sources. These are often provided without analysis or context; items that do contain analysis or explanation should always be evaluated for bias in the same way as database content. Some government research has external funding or may have been completed in pursuit of a specific agenda.

Websites published by the U.S. Government will have a banner at the top that you can click to find more information, similar to the one below.

Museums

Many museums provide access to portions of their collections online for free. This is a great way to view primary sources, historic books, artwork, specimens, and other items not found in a typical database. Like any content, museum sources should be evaluated for bias, misinformation, disinformation, and accuracy.

Legal and Judicial Resources

It is sometimes more accurate to find legal and judicial information directly from the source. Documents like transcripts, opinions, findings, police records, and forensic reports are sometimes found on the website of the court. This can be one of the best ways to view a primary source without input from others.
